Mr. Prime Minister,
I am writing to express my concern over recent reports questioning whether the Trans Mountain Expansion Pipeline project (TMX) remains viable. Respectfully, this is a ludicrous assertion especially given the historic economic challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
	
Mr. Prime Minister, your decision to ensure the pipeline would be built and benefit Canadians was the right call then – and it still is today. Trans Mountain means:

 - Job creation – almost 8,000 people have been hired to date to work on the project, with thousands more over construction and the life of the pipeline.

 - Revenue for government – over the first 20 years of operation, the pipeline will pump close to $50 billion into government coffers in B.C., Alberta and Ottawa, revenue that will be used to pay for things like healthcare, education and infrastructure.

 - Indigenous opportunity – as of February 2020, TMX has signed 59 benefit agreements with Indigenous groups worth half-a-billion dollars, creating jobs, opportunity and a pathway to prosperity.

 - Improved market access – Trans Mountain has the potential to enable an increased flow of Canadian energy resources to international markets, specifically Asia where it could help lower global GHG emissions.

According to the International Energy Agency’s latest outlook, world oil demand is forecast to rise into the 2040s but the multi-billion dollar opportunity to meet that demand will increasingly by served by OPEC nations and jurisdictions outside of free markets. Trans Mountain can help mitigate that.

At a time when the industry that represents the largest sub-sector of the Canadian economy – energy – is reeling from the twin hit of a global price war and the COVID-19 pandemic, now is NOT the time to entertain walking away from the Trans Mountain project. It sends the wrong message to the international investment community and could add to the tens of thousands of good-paying middle-class jobs already lost.

The world needs more Canadian energy – and Trans Mountain will help make that happen.
