Surrey Mayor, Councillors & Police Board
Dear Mayor and Council, I am writing to express my serious concerns with Surrey’s proposed 2021 budget. It is clear that rapidly escalating costs associated with the police transition are driving a steep 200% increase to household levies and a staggering 11% overall increase to property taxes. It is shockingly irresponsible and out-of-touch to triple some taxes at a time when COVID-19 is spreading at an alarming rate, threatening the health and well-being of Surrey families and our local businesses. Like other municipalities dealing with this pandemic, Surrey should be working to reduce unnecessary spending so that we can continue to invest in crucial supports for our most vulnerable. We do not need to be funding an expensive, unnecessary, and unpopular police transition plan in the middle of a global pandemic. Surrey residents still don’t have real transparency on the true cost of this transition, which has tripled from $19 million to $63.7 million in the last year. Mayor and Council must move urgently to disclose the true costs of his plan. I strongly call on our elected leaders to reject this crippling tax increase, and put the well-being of families ahead of an unnecessary police transition.
